I’ve been doing some pretty meaningful things at work lately. They may not be as fun as developing training or playing with my Web 2.0 tools, but I’m getting some very “high-level” experience right now. My boss has been focusing on other things since about March. Our policy and compliance person left for greener pastures and “they” aren’t replacing the position. So, while my boss is doing two jobs, I’m in my cube doing stuff that wouldn’t normally be on my plate – a GREAT opportunity for me.
Most recently I met with a representative from a government agency that we must answer to. We have annual “measures” that we must “meet” or we are in big trouble. Some of these measures involve training – and I have to make these happen at all costs.
I had some concern about whether our current trajectory was going to measure up by the end of the fiscal year. In my opinion, we have exceeded the requirements already, but sometimes these things are all about interpretation. A meeting with this official is not usually something I could do at “my level” but it needed to be done and I felt like I could do it.
I spent 1/2 a day writing up a summary of our accomplishments and future plans and then prepared my delivery of it. It was a fabulous 12 minute meeting! I presented my “case” and he agreed that it looked like we were poised to exceed expectations. I felt so good when I walked out of there!

Congratulations on your opportunity and the successful meeting. Sounds like this was a terrific experience –
I’ve been enjoying your blog.
